The Washington treaty then simply confirmed this evolution, cemented in two classes defined by their main caliber guns - 6 inches and 8 inches, already standards in the Royal Navy. Whereas the USN made a very long "pause" from the 1907' Chester class, construction of cruisers went on before and during WWI in Great Britain, with the drive for standardization with gradual improvements, from the C to the D and finally E class, while the Hawkins created a brand new branch, pioneering the "heavy cruiser".
